Becoming a Solicitor – Buss Murton

When we interview for the post of Trainee Solicitor, we are seeking potential successors for our business. We value the fact that most of our current Partners are ‘home-grown’, having completed their training contracts with us. Daldeep Jaswal is our authorised Training Partner and has overall responsibility for our Trainee Solicitors during the period of their Training Contract or Qualifying Work Experience (QWE).

Our aim is to provide you with an excellent all-round training and development programme—primarily providing you with technical expertise across a range of disciplines and also cultivating your soft skills such as client care and business development. At the end of your contract, you should be a competent and confident solicitor with the ability to take on and build up your own caseload.

Company Culture

At Buss Murton Law, we foster a friendly, inclusive, and supportive environment where everyone is valued. Our firm blends the best of traditional values with a modern, forward-thinking approach to legal practice. We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and encourage open communication and teamwork. Our culture emphasises continuous learning, professional growth, and work-life balance.  We believe that a positive workplace helps our people thrive and deliver the best results for our clients.

Our Criteria for Selection

We are seeking forward-thinking individuals with a drive to learn and the intellectual ability to reach their aspired goals. You should have strong interpersonal skills enabling you to communicate with others at all levels, and some commercial and business awareness. A 2:1 degree in any discipline is the minimum requirement.

Additionally, to be considered for a training contract, applicants must have successfully passed the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) Stage 1 (SQE1) as a minimum requirement, or have a confirmed date booked for the exam.

Induction

We provide a thorough and comprehensive induction spread over a two-week period. A proportion of that time will be spent within the department of your first seat for an introduction to policies and procedures.

From past experience, we know that having a mentor to support you during your first year has a positive effect on your ability to integrate into the culture of the firm. We find that the person best qualified for this position is a current Trainee who will have the experience to guide you through your first few months and help you adjust to working life as a Trainee.

Seats

During your training contract, you will spend time in both the commercial and private client areas, which will include seats in contentious and non-contentious departments. Depending on business needs at the time, you may spend time in any of the following areas of law:

  • Employment and Dispute Resolution

  • Family

  • Private Client (Wills, Trusts and Probate)

  • Commercial Property

  • Residential Property

  • Company and Commercial

If you are joining us for QWE as part of the SQE route, you may spend the whole time in one area of law.
